This feature of Jewish Records Indexing - Poland aids researchers who
may not recall all names or Polish spelling of names their families, but whose memories may be sparked by scanning the list.
To find records for any surname on the list, search the JRI-Poland database
for the exact spelling in the Gubernia or Province in which the town is located. (Do not search by town name.) Make a note of the source
reference at the bottom of the search results. For information on how to obtain records listed in the search results and learn more about
JRI-Poland, please read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) and other informative documents linked from the "Learn" section
on the JRI-Poland home page.
Surname lists come from both Polish-language lists (records up to 1867 are in Polish) and transliterations of Russian-language lists (from 1868 to 1915).
Therefore, spelling of a name may vary depending on its source. In particular, the letters "i" and "j" are interchangeable, as are
"h" and the sound "ch", and the letter "h" may sometimes appear as "g" (the letter h is not in the Russian alphabet).
As additional records for a town are indexed, the surname list will be updated.
Note: Surname lists may be posted in advance of the indices to the records of specific towns being added to the JRI-Poland searchable database.
