Search by Distance from a town

Radius Search from a Geographic Coordinate

Our ancestors were mobile and you may find some of your family moved 10, 20, 30, or 50 miles from your ancestral town. You can search a circular area from the latitude/longitude of your town from a distance of 1 mile to 100 miles. You can find the latitude and longitude of your town using the JewishGen Gazetteer.

This radius search allows you to cross the boundaries of Gubernia and Wojewodztwa, giving you a more flexible tool than using the Geographical Region restriction.

1. Enter the Latitude and Longitude of your town  (example 5145, 1928 for Lodz).
2. Select a radius of from 1 to 100 miles.
3. Geographical Region should be set to “All Regions”
4. Click Start Search

To search for your surname in a particular town, you must enter the town’s latitude and longitude and then specify a search radius of one mile from that town. Do not enter 0 miles. If you enter 0, the system will not work!

Surviving records less than 100 years old are held in the Civil Records Offices (Urzad Stanu Cywilnego) of each town.

For information on the 20th century records available for your town, visit the Routes to Roots Foundation website, click on the 'SEARCH DATABASE' button (on the right side) and enter the town name. Look for the town name in the Repository/City column of the search results. There are typically links to lists of available births, marriage and death records for the town.

Note, however, the Routes to Roots Foundation database may indicate turn of the century records that have already been transferred to the appropriate branch of the Polish State Archives where they can be indexed for the JRI-Poland database.
